F.E.A.R. Extraction Point Developer Interview

Game: F.E.A.R. Extraction Point
Company: VU Games

What if you could ask the producer of F.E.A.R. Extraction Point a few questions about the highly anticipated expansion pack? We were thinking the same thing... Read on.

GV: Who are you and what is your role with F.E.A.R. Extraction Point?

Tim Hall: Tim Hall, producer, F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, Vivendi Universal Games.

GV: Given the huge amount of fan-based media written after F.E.A.R., did it have any influence to the direction of it's continuation?

Tim Hall: We listened to the comments about the original and have addressed some of the environmental criticisms with F.E.A.R. Extraction Point. So we have several new areas for the player to run around in and we also have some more ranged combat opportunities this time around

GV: Any other family ties going to be brought forward during this new experience?

Tim Hall: We were not able to get any of the cast of Family Ties to help out with game. Believe me, I wanted Michael J. Fox to appear as your long lost brother, but the only guy who returned our calls was that dude who played Nick near the end of the show and it just wasn’t going to work out for us.

GV: Will you, as the character, begin to exhibit some of your mother’s traits? Kinesis?

Tim Hall: No – but if you aren’t quick, you will end up dead like her.

GV: Any direct changes to the enemy A.I.?

Tim Hall: We have done some modifications to the A.I. and, while they were pretty active about flanking and taking in F.E.A.R., we have upped that a bit in F.E.A.R. Extraction Point. You will also notice some new units for you to have fun with.

GV: Any backlash from the gore? And, are you going to up, or even drop some, in order appease others?

Tim Hall: No backlash at all. We have definitely got some new blood rooms that look pretty good and my favorite quote when dealing with the localized versions of the games was "…result in enemies dissolving in a meaty cloud of blood" – it’s things like that which let you know you are on the right path.

GV: Any changes to MP?

Tim Hall: We have been updating the MP portion of the game all along with new maps and gameplay modes and we did just release F.E.A.R. Combat, the multiplayer component of F.E.A.R., for free, so we felt that the Extraction Point should just concentrate on the single player aspect of the game.

GV: Any changes to the SDK or modification tools?

Tim Hall: Yes, but nothing we will be releasing to the community at this point

GV: Are their plans to take F.E.A.R. into a more episodic approach as some other companies?

Tim Hall: For now, we’re concentrating on Extraction Point and our next-gen titles. As for what’s in the future, anything is possible.

GV: Character customization in MultiPlayer...Any changes?

Tim Hall: No new MP features with F.E.A.R. Extraction Point.

GV: Is the expansion done on the same engine?

Tim Hall: Yes, the expansion has been made with the same engine.

GV: I am personally still looking for innocent bystanders in FPS games, not so much for the ability to hurt them, but for the design of having to watch what you shoot. You can achieve this other ways, but you get the point. Can I hope to see some of this in the expansion or in the future?

Tim Hall: Well, it is kind of hard to find a lot of bystanders in a city where you’ve just had a massive mushroom-style explosion, but there are 1 or 2 hanging around in F.E.A.R. Extraction Point, so keep an eye out.

Thanks again to Tim Hall and all the folks at VU Games. Be on the lookout for our full review of F.E.A.R. Extraction Point once the game hits stores.
