Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising: Meet the Chaos Race!

Company: THQ

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising is a Real Time Strategy game that is the next game in the Warhammer 40,000 series coming out for the PC in March. Now I'm going to start this by confessing to you all that I had never played any of the Warhammer 40,000 games before last week, nor have I played the tabletop games before either. So if you're expecting me to tell you how this one compares to the previous ones, my knowledge is very limited. But that's the beauty of Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising, you don't have to have ever played the game before to enjoy this expansion!

Not only do you not need to have played before, but you don't have to even own the previous games. Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising is an expansion that stands on its own. If you have the previous Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II game and also get Chaos Rising, then you will have access to all the characters of both for multiplayer. But If you only have Chaos Rising, you are still able to play multiplayer against the people who only have the previous one and they can still play against your Chaos races, even if they only have the latest ones. Basically, no matter which version you own, you can still play against your friends regardless of which version they own. You'll just only have access to the races on the version you have. By doing this, they've managed not to exclude anyone, which is awesome in my opinion!

Multiplayer can be played with two to eight players (in even numbers), with any number of them controlled by the computer. Be careful though, the computer is quite good at winning. It'll sneak up on you while you're busy attacking your friends if you're not careful. You can choose a free for all with everyone against each other or you can break up into teams and work together. Given all the choices of troop types available, multiplayer is really very robust. In Chaos Rising, they have introduced the Chaos races for you to play as in multiplayer. They're a really nice addition to the cast that was not available in the previous games. Each of the new characters have their own unique abilities. It will take you a bit to get used to all these different abilities, but some of them are really powerful so you should test out everything at least a few times and every character several times as well!

You probably would like to know a bit about the new characters that you can use now too. The Chaos Space Marines incude Chaos Lord, Plague Champion, and Chaos Sorceror. Chaos Lord is your strong attacking player. He's the "tank" character that you just run into a huge group of enemies and start slaughtering. Personally, I like the powerhouse characters. Plague Champion is the defense character. He's good for standing outside the battle and healing your allies. The Chaos Sorceror is a more balanced, multipurpose character. I found him to be a lot of fun as well. He can handle the melee if necessary and he can also cast some very powerful spells as well. I think of the new characters, I liked him the most, but it does take some time to get the hang of using his spells! Along with these characters, you also get Chaos Units, vehicles, and Daemons, so that's a whole lot of new items for you! In addition to all this, there are five new multiplayer units. The Librarian joins the Space Marines. He is a very powerful spellcaster, so you're really going to like having him available. There's also a new Ork, Eldar, and two new Tyranids.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising is more than a multiplayer battle though. For those of you who are like me and prefer the story mode to multiplayer, there is also a single player Story Mode available. In it, you will be playing as the Space Marines and the Chaos characters are the enemy. The story does pick up right where Dawn of War left off, but you don't have to have played the previous stories to jump right in and pick up. You might be missing some of the back story, but you'll pick it all up pretty quickly.

If you're a fan of Real Time Strategies, you should definitely go pick up Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II - Chaos Rising as soon as it comes out. Even if you've never played the previous ones, you can start right here and make it your introduction to the series. If you're a long time fan, you know you're going to want access to play as the Chaos races!
