Shock2
Score: 97%
Developer:
Device Type: Controller

Function:

The precision of the Shock2 is actually pretty good. When tested in a comparison test that really demanded control, the Shock2 slid into place near the very top of the list. (To check out the results, check my ?Control Freaks? feature...) The sticks offer nice control and a rubberized coating, and the buttons are nicely designed and laid out. The shoulder buttons are on two different ?levels? of the back of the controller, making it very easy to make sure that your fingers are on the correct shoulder buttons. However, if you are one of those people who use one finger for both shoulder buttons (per side), take note that the corner between the two levels makes it all but physically impossible to press both with one finger. In addition, the Shock2 has a ?NEGCON? compatible mode, making it perfect for Namco games and NEGCON compatible games.

Performance:

The Shock2 doesn?t stray very far from the ?norm? when it comes to analog controllers. The design looks different, since the handles are pointed, but that really doesn?t affect gameplay much. The analog sticks are top notch, making the Shock2 score very highly against other controllers when it comes to sheer precision and control. If anything, it may take a little bit of time to get used to the fact that the Select button is above the Start button, instead of beside it. This doesn?t usually cause any problems, though, since the Start button is the easiest to hit and is the one you will be most likely to hit when frantically trying to pause your game.

The Shock2 is a very comfortable, accurate controller. Its handles have grips on the underside that are ergonomically designed to fit your hands well. The NEGCON mode is available, but not nearly as impressive as the Shock2 mode. The vibration is very nice and ?solid.? While the size is a little above average, the weight is about average, if not lighter than most. This light weight allows for a long gaming spree with little fatigue. All around, the Shock2 is one of the better controllers I?ve played with.

Features:
  • Dual Shock compatible
  • Four modes: Shock2, NEGCON, Analog, and Digital
  • Dual analog with push-down buttons
  • Independent Turbo button with LED indicator (even works with D-pad)
  • Ergonomic notched handles
  • Rubber texture
  • 6?8? cord

Drawbacks & Problems::

Well, the handles are pointed, but that is surprisingly not uncomfortable. The only thing I would have to say against this controller is that some games will require you to hit the mode button. That?s about it. The Shock2 is a well designed, comfortable controller.
