Instead of doing one single horror movie, Deon Taylor decided to break the movie up into two shorter films reminiscent of Tales from the Crypt and hosted by Flavor Flav. The first of these (contrary to what the back of the box says) is appropriately called "Karma." It is about four bank robbers. Dice (Sticky Fingaz Jones), Twan (Fredro Starr), and Dee (Tyrin Turner) are pretty accomplished bank robbers in that they have pulled off several jobs without getting caught. Twan decides to bring Mouse (Michael J. Pagan) into this job, though. Mouse just really isn't ready for this kind of work. Things just go wrong during this robbery.
Things get even worse when during the getaway, their car breaks down in the middle of nowhere on the way back to the city. They knock on the door of the nearest house and find Mr. and Mrs. Hinkley and weird relative Jim Bob (James Otis) home. Their plan is to just steal their car keys and get back to the city as quick as they can. Unfortunately for them, their night is about to get even worse, and they'll be lucky if any of them make it back to the city alive.
There were a few technical details that bugged me like the fact that the phone wasn't plugged in, and he would have known that because he wouldn't have heard a dial tone. The green screen was pretty obvious at some points in the car too. But other than little things like that, it was a really good film.
The second movie was even better than the first in my opinion. It also is appropriately named "Storm." In this one, five high school students (who really look older than high school, if you ask me) are having a sleepover at Cindy's (Andrea Bogart) house since her parents are gone for the weekend. Her boyfriend, Tom (Jordan Woolley), and friends Serena (Sandra McCoy), Gerard (Dante Basco), and Mitch (Chico Benymon) are all there with her. So there are two interesting parts to this movie. First, the kids decide to play the "Bloody Mary" game. I'm not even going to describe it here, but if you don't know about Bloody Mary, just Google it. After the game is over, strange things start to happen. Serena starts seeing things. Then, a clown (Tony Todd) shows up at the door. Really, a clown in full costume complete with a red nose that honks. He needs to use the phone. Did I mention that it is storming so hard outside that the phones are down and the electricity is blinking? Needless to say, these kids are really having a bad night.
When Serena winds up dead, they think things just can't get any worse or weirder. Once the cop shows up, they think that things are going to get a lot better quickly. But is anyone there who they seem to be? As more of them end up dead, suspicions grow. Will they be able to figure out who the real killer is before they're all dead?
My one complaint with this one is that they weren't careful with details like earrings and lip rings. They continually changed sides of the body in different scenes. You could even see the wire pulling the faucet at one point. But these things were really minor and didn't detract from the movie. There is one special feature on the DVD. It is listed as "Coming Soon From Nite Tales The Brand," but is actually a making-of, which is very interesting.
So, in summation, if you come across this movie, don't judge it by the cover. It is actually a very good horror movie. I recommend you go buy it today!
