Overall, The Detonator is decent, but not something you’ll want to see over and over again. From the very beginning, it is clear that the movie isn’t exactly running on a big time budget. Scenery is bland and the effects are merely passable. These can all be forgiven. What can’t be forgiven are the stiff, lifeless performances and terrible pacing.
Snipes' performance is phoned in. Granted, action stars are rarely known for their riveting performances; but Snipes is capable of much better and it feels like he’s just there for the paycheck. His performance doesn’t help the plot, which is your typical action movie premise of a tough ass-kicker saving the beautiful woman. As over-used as this plot is, at times you really get the feeling that the movie never really knows where it wants to go next. This, of course, leads to some awkward and confusing viewing moments.
The rest of DVD package leaves much to be desired; in fact, there isn't anything there. Though, after watching the movie I couldn’t imagine wanting to sit through alternate endings or other supplemental features. If you’re a fan of B-movie action flicks, you might find The Detonator interesting. Otherwise, you can skip it.
