I had never heard of Russell Brand until recently and odds are you haven't either. He hosted the MTV Video Music Awards last year and had a major part of the movie, Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Other than that, he isn't well known in the United States, but he is a star in the UK. His lack of fame in the States actually works in his favor because it feels like seeing a legendary comedian re-establish himself before he made it big.
Russell has a unique style and personality all his own. He looks like a metro-glam rock star, but with the chops of comedy greats like Bill Hicks or George Carlin. One minute he will rave about his notorious performance at the VMA's and then the next, he will break down the philosophical nature of meeting girls.
I can't remember how long it has been since I have heard a comic talk about sex as much as Russell Brand does. He never strays into awkward territories, but with the uncut version of, Russell Brand in New York City he doesn't mind illustrating some of his grosser points.
I saw this same stand-up on Comedy Central a few weeks back and the bonus material that was cut from the aired version almost makes it worth buying all by itself. One of the main bits that was cut is a feature called "Loose Cannon Drunk Girl" and it is about an audience member in the front row who had too much to drink. She becomes very vocal about her feelings for Russell. He had to stop his show four times and correct her and I nearly wet myself with his witty retorts. It also features the entire monologue from last year's VMA's and a short feature where Russell walks about New York City with his camera crew.
His style of comedy is most definitely not for everyone. He talks a lot about pop culture, even more about sex and his British accent just makes it tough to understand him. But if you don't mind any of those things, then you will laugh until it hurts. Russell Brand in New York City: Extended & Uncensored is easily a must own if you appreciate good comedy and if you don't, Russell Brand will reply to your hate mail and then you will laugh. I promise.
