Marcus (Philip Winchester) and Justin (Tim Draxl) have been best friends since childhood. As grownups though, their lives are quite a bit different. Justin is happily married to Ann (Kelly Overton), but Marcus is a playboy with a string of women whose names he usually doesn't remember. Nevertheless, Justin and Ann are still his best friends and hope that he'll settle down someday. They go out with him, keep him company, and even drive him home if he calls late at night. Marcus even works for Justin at a day spa. Marcus has a severe problem though. He has a disorder called parasomnia. He's a sleepwalker and when he's in this state, he does things that he normally wouldn't and he has no recollection of anything at all. He's also a sexaholic. When he wakes up one morning to find that he's had sex with someone that he shouldn't have, he decides to get help and join a group. But things just start going downhill from there.
On his birthday, Justin and Ann throw Marcus a surprise party at his apartment. Ann has to leave after the setup though, so she misses the party. At the party, he gets the knife as a birthday present, from himself. He finds the receipt for the wrapping paper in his pocket, but doesn't remember anything about buying it. The next morning is when Marcus wakes up covered in blood with no recollection of why. The police show up at his door saying someone called 911, but he manages to talk his way out of it and hide the blood. Marcus is determined that he couldn't have hurt anyone, even though he learns that Ann is now missing. Marcus tries to record what happens when he's asleep, but the next morning he finds the camera busted, tape ruined, and a trail of blood to his car with 13.4 miles on the trip odometer that wasn't there when he went to sleep. While at work that day, he and Justin learn that Anne's body was found. Marcus drives to the spot where she was found and finds that it is exactly 13.4 miles from his garage. He also finds the knife that he had hidden at the bottom of the pool in the pool drain is now back in his kitchen drawer. Personally if that were me, I'd be convinced that I did it, but Marcus is still determined to find proof of anything at all since he can't remember. He goes as far as to get his friend Becky (Lacey Chabert) to handcuff him to the bed at night to keep him in, all while trying to find out what is going on and why he keeps waking up at his father's grave. But when you can't trust your own memories, who can you trust?
In addition to the movie, there are a lot of Special Features available on the Blu-ray. I do love that Blu-ray movies have so much storage that they can add all these things. In My Sleep is an independent film. You can really tell a difference in the behind the scenes and making-of featurettes because the writer/director Allen Wolf is always with the cast and having a great time. It's just such a laid back atmosphere that it looks like they had a wonderful time making the film. I liked the information I learned in the features because it really pointed out things I hadn't noticed in the film because they were blended in so well, like the "Hitchcock" scene where it looks like bars are behind Marcus and closing in on him. He also talked about the audio and how carefully it was done to promote maximum suspense, and they really did an amazing job with it. Turn up the sound and you'll feel like it is all happening to you instead of Marcus. One thing to note is that an Alternate Ending is listed in the Special Features, but it was nowhere to be found on my copy of the Blu-ray.
In My Sleep is a wonderfully done thriller that will keep you guessing until the end. I wasn't sure if Marcus was the killer or not until the very moment that it was revealed. They do an amazing job giving you all the information you need, but still not making anything obvious, very much like The Sixth Sense did. I recommend that you all check out In My Sleep today!
