The season opens up with Rocko and Heffer looking after Filbert’s bird while he is away. While under their care, the bird proves to be a pain, and when it is “no more” and is “bereft of life,” the pair fret over what to tell Filbert when he returns.
Another episode tells how the Chameleon Brothers come to America. In their story, the ruler of their country discovers the joy of coffee, but when the brothers aren’t able to provide the java, they are thrown into prison until they can come up with a solution. Let’s just say, their new brew leaves a lot to be desired, but when the king proclaims it to be good, everyone else must follow suit.
There are a couple of episodes in Rocko's Modern Life: Season Three that join the two half-episode cartoons. In one episode, Rocko and Heffer teach Filbert about the joys of Halloween, until they are stalked by a ghost, and in the follow-up, the show plays off of the classic Alfred Hitchcock tale, Rear Window, or the 2007 remake Disturbia with Shia LaBeouf. In this cartoon, Rocko believes he sees Mrs. Bighead killing and burying Ed.
Another pair of connected segments is towards the end of the season when Filbert finally decides to ask Doctor Hutchison to marry him. The first cartoon in this episode is the proposal, while the second one is the actual wedding day.
There is one case where the show doesn’t simply link two parts of an episode, but actually makes a full half-hour show. In this episode, Ralph Bighead comes home and decides to get out of the animation business, but a contract keeps him from actually getting out. He decides that he needs to create a show so bad that the studio will end his contract, so he hires Rocko, Filbert and Heffer to make a show. You can tell that a lot of the show’s creators put their own personal experiences into this particular episode as it tends to point out some of the idiosyncrasies of the animation industry.
This is by no means all that Rocko's Modern Life: Season Three has to offer. There is a musical episode where Rocko tries to get Conglom-O to stop polluting, an episode where Rocko and Heffer go onto a talk show after an argument leaves their friendship in trouble, and even an episode where Rocko and Heffer go to France and Rocko falls in love at first sight.
While Rocko's Modern Life: Season Three is packed with a lot of great episodes, it doesn’t have anything in the way of special features, so if you were hoping for a bit extra to complement this show, you won’t find it. That being said, Rocko’s Modern Life more than stands on its own two feet and both kids and adults will enjoy this show.
