Batman: Bad Blood picks up the DC Animated Universe continuity with a third Batman-centric film, one that actually has far less Batman in it than you would normally expect.

The film starts with Batman (Jason O'Mara, Life on Mars, Terra Nova) confronting a new enemy, and while he doesn't have Robin, Bruce's son Damian (Stuart Allan), at his side, a new vigilante has started making her presence known. Going by the name of Batwoman (Yvonne Strahovski, Chuck, Dexter), this new apparent ally puts on the Bat-mantle, but doesn't follow all of Batman's rules - for instance, she has no problem using guns. Unfortunately, this fight doesn't go well for either vigilante and the aftermath leaves Gotham wondering if Batman is gone for good.

Learning of Batman's disappearance, Damian returns to Gotham and finds that Dick Grayson/Nightwing (Sean Maher, Serenity, Much Ado About Nothing) has reluctantly put on the cape and cowl to make sure Batman's presence is felt. With Dick and Damian teamed up, they start to investigate exactly what happened to Bruce Wayne, and in the process, they stumble upon Batwoman and have to decide how much to let her into the Bat-family. Then the new enemy that stopped Batman and Batwoman shows back up and takes out The Vault hidden by Lucius Fox (Ernie Hudson, Ghostbusters). In retaliation, Lucius' son, Luke (Gaius Charles, Grey's Anatomy, Friday Night Lights) decides to join in the fight as well.

Batman: Bad Blood comes packed with a couple of interesting featurettes. One talks about how the Bat-family has grown since Batman's original days; everything from the origins of Robin to the different incarnations of Batman's sidekick. The featurette also talks about the original Batwoman and how that character has evolved over the years.

Another featurette is all about how the fights in the recent animated movies are choreographed and developed. There is a lot of emphasis in this feature on Batman's fighting styles and how it has evolved over the years. There is also a lengthy preview of the next animated movie, Justice League vs. Teen Titans, a film that will not only continue Damian's story, but also feature many of the Justice League heroes that haven't been as central in the recent releases.

Rounding out the special features are two Batman: The Brave and the Bold episodes, "The Knights of Tomorrow!" and "The Criss Cross Conspiracy!" Both of these episodes feature Batwoman and one even features Damian with Dick as Batman.

As the DC Animated Universe grows, it's good to see previous voice actors, like O'Mara, Allan, Maher reprise their roles, but seeing known actors take on roles as new characters, like Batwoman and Luke Fox, are introduced is also promising for the overall progress of this series.
