Electra Woman (Grace Helbig) AKA Lori and Dyna Girl (Hannah Hart) AKA Judy or Jude, as Lori calls her, are two gals living in Ohio, working to stop crime in their hometown. Sure, they aren't megastar superheroes like Major Vaunt (Clayton Chitty) with endorsements from energy drink companies, but they are doing what they can to fight the criminal element in their town and they are rockin' it. Do they get interrupted by their annoying teen-aged neighbor Bernice (Matreya Fedor), asking for homework help? Sure, but it's all in a day's work. Then one day, the unthinkable happens...
During a crime-stopping event in which Dyna Girl's Dyna-Suction weapon exerts a bit too much force and rips a dude's arm off, the girls gain instant fame when the incident is caught on video and uploaded to the net. Before you know it, they get a call from Creative Masked Management in Hollywood asking them to come to L.A. and be represented by them! The girls are excited, thrilled beyond belief, but they agree that they aren't going to change for this company. They'll be the same as they always were, complete with the ragged out Electra Car (a vintage Mazda 323 that has seen better days), their homemade suits and weapons, and they'll continue to work as partners. Above all, they won't agree to anything until they leave CMM and discuss it all - but of course, Lori gets swept away by manager Dan Dixon's (Andy Buckley, Bridesmaids) spiel and agrees for the both of them. Judy is upset, but surely nothing will change, right? Before you know it, these two are the "it girls" of the superhero world and living the life. But as Electra Woman's popularity soars, Dyna Girl finds herself being dubbed as the sidekick, sometimes even being cut out of interviews altogether. Naturally, the two begin to quarrel, but nothing can bring together a pair of best friends like a super villain, and when the Empress of Evil comes to town and begins wreaking havoc, it’ll take Electra Woman and Dyna Girl and their scrappy wits, plus a few other impromptu sidekicks along the way, to take this monster down and save the day.
Honestly, although Electra Woman & Dyna Girl is a collection of webisodes with YouTube stars, you wouldn’t know it to watch it. The production quality is surprisingly high and I must say that I really enjoyed the show, despite my inclination to shy away from YouTubers, since they typically don’t impress or amuse me. These girls are seriously funny and Hannah Hart’s timing is hilarious.
As for special features, this one comes packed with a number of them, although for the most part, they are short and sweet. There's an audio commentary with Helbig and Hart that's fun to listen to, mostly because it's just cool hear these funny ladies chat about the film. You've also got a Making Of featurette with interviews and behind the scenes stuff, plus a featurette on CMM itself. Then there are another 8 short promo videos where Helbig and Hart dish about making the movie poster, an odd superhero called Plant Man, CMM, Dan Dixon, the Megaline news channel, the fact that Dyna Girl is NOT a sidekick and a really funny ad for them selling the Electra Car. Probably the most fun featurette is a 12 minute piece from their panel at the San Diego Comic-Con where they talk about making the film. Comic-Con panels are always great fun, but these two obviously have a good time working together and that shines through here, and in the film as well.
While it won’t win any awards, Electra Woman & Dyna Girl is a fun romp. There’s a bit of raunch to it, so it’s not for young kids, but whether you are watching it based on nostalgia for yesteryear or you simply like silly comedy, call Electra Woman & Dyna Girl for a good time.
