Demetri's act is divided into several segments. The first is the classic stand-up style where Demetri just talks to the audience. He follows that up with various prop-based comedy skits including a great bit with an easel and paper. Demetri's "Large Pad" lets him illustrate his jokes in a slightly unusual manner. Many of his jokes during this part involve charts, graphs and simple, but hilarious, illustrations. This segment is, by far, my favorite of the show.
Martin's act then continues with jokes put to various musical instruments. During this part, Demetri will play his guitar, a piano, bells or a harmonica (or several at the same time) while telling his jokes in order to give them just a little bit of a different feel.
Demetri Martin. Person. concludes with a performance art piece about where Demetri's jokes go after he tells them. This is a rather odd and slightly humorous segment, but it was my least favorite of the set.
There are quite a few special features on this little DVD. Some of Martin's past stand-ups, including his previous Comedy Central event on Comedy Central Presents are included. The other stand-ups are from various stages in Demetri's career and, while not quite as good as his current stuff, it's easy to see how his style and act evolved throughout the years.
Demetri Martin is great and this DVD of his special is for anyone who loves to laugh and enjoys standup. Demetri's unassuming, blatant and straight-man approach to comedy is gold and worth watching at least once.
