Like High School Musical, Camp Rock centers on two main characters, one guy and one girl. Mitchie Torres (Demi Lovato) is dying to spend her summer at an exclusive camp geared towards musically-inclined teens. Her parents have told her that they just don't have the extra cash right now and she is devastated. But after her mom, Connie (Maria Canals-Barrera), gets a little creative to make her daughter's wish a reality, Mitchie heads off to Camp Rock.
Shane Gray (Joe Jonas) lives in a completely different world from Mitchie. He's a very famous pop star along with his 2 brothers. Shane has an attitude problem, though. Since becoming famous, he's become a problem child, lashing out and acting like a prima donna. His brothers decide that he needs to go back to the camp that they used to go to every summer and just get over himself. So they drop him off there and leave.
While Shane is busy trying to hide from everybody, Mitchie is trying her best to be popular. Trying so hard, in fact, that she lies about who her mom is to make people think that she's rich and famous. It works initially; I guess teenagers aren't as doubting as they used to be. She gets in with the most popular group, lead by Tess Tyler (Meaghan Jette Martin). Tess thinks she is perfect. Tess's mom is a huge pop star who's won many Grammy Awards, so Tess just assumes she is going to follow in her footsteps. Mitchie is very excited to be a part of the popular group, but does she really want to be friends with the girl who sings "Too Cool"?
As you can figure out easily, Mitchie and Shane are going to end up meeting, but it's definitely not love at first sight. They have a long way to go in becoming friends. The camp isn't like any other camp I've ever seen, though. You only see three counselors total, one of whom is Shane Gray. With as many kids as are there, you'd expect to see at least a few more, even if they're staying out of the way. They also don't seem to do very many camp type activities, but I guess things aren't normal at a music camp.
The DVD also has some extra features, mainly music videos for you to watch. Overall, Camp Rock felt like Disney made a movie about teenagers, but geared it towards preteens. It does get a little better after the first 30 minutes or so, but maybe I just became numb by then. The only people who seem to like it, on message boards at least, only wanted to see the Jonas brothers. Really, you'd have to be a fan of Joe Jonas to enjoy it, since Kevin and Nick Jonas are in less than 15 minutes of the movie. It's not horrible, but it has several plot problems with the little bit of a plot that it has. None of the songs are even catchy. My advice, unless you're a huge Joe Jonas fan, you should go find something more interesting to watch than Camp Rock.
