Legion: Legion for the PC |

Legion's graphics will take you on a trip down memory lane. The developers have turned down the graphical anchor of 3D polygons and have chosen a system based on 2D images that resemble games like Civilization more than anything else. This isn't a negative factor, though, as the game makes use of these graphics along with a nice musical score to supplement the gameplay.

With world champion tabletop wargamers on the development staff, you can imagine the gameplay resembling something along the lines of Warhammer. Indeed, Legion is a turn-based strategy game set in the height of the Roman empire, and you choose to command one of the many different factions on a number of maps. Army movement done is turn-based, but the battles are fought in real time with a clever system that lets you set up the battle and watch as your officers command the units for you.

Right now the overall feel of the game is a bit too easy. A few bugs here and there, along with limited AI make it a cakewalk to complete any level. But this is the Beta version, and they will surely remedy the final version, so you can be sure there will be plenty of options and varying levels of opponent intelligence.

Along with army management and fighting comes a simple city building system. You don't actually create new cities, but conquer and help already existing ones to thrive and grow. This is where your resource gathering comes into play, as you have 3 resources to keep up with, and you have to construct new buildings to help you gather more. If this preview is any indication of what has yet to come, then we are all in for a treat. Legion could be the new and unique jewel in the large, dirty pile of strategy games.
