Graphics & Sound:

You are Lucky Luke, a Sheriff in an old west American town... as envisioned by the French. The graphics are cartoony and have a well developed 'Old West' theme, which is strongly reinforced by the soundtrack. The music sounds very much like strains of piano music straight out of a TV show about the old west. There are some comical elements in Lucky Luke. For example, when some of the enemies are shot, their pants fall down.

Gameplay:

Fun, but difficult. One interesting feature of Lucky Luke is the multiple styles of gameplay and scenarios, including making your way through western towns filled with baddies, riding a stagecoach through a series of obstacles, being chased by a tornado and a herd of buffalo, and chasing after a train. It will take a lot of skill and effort on your part if you're gonna keep Lucky Luke lucky... even on the easy setting. If you are not one to get easily discouraged and you like side scrollers, the you might have a blast with Lucky Luke.

Difficulty:

Lucky Luke is difficult. It has three difficulty settings, and even the easy setting is a challenge. One thing that makes it difficult is the rarity of life pickups. You can get additional bullets in several places scattered throughout the levels, and also by killing an enemy, but the life pickups are not very frequent. The best thing to do in Lucky Luke is to study the levels as you go through them. If you get to a part that you can't get through, that "thing" that you saw earlier in the level and didn't know how to get to (or what it was) probably had something to do with it. Also, on the levels that move around you, such as the stagecoach level, watch for areas of the screen that are unaffected by the different obstacles at different times, and stay there.

Game Mechanics:

Lucky Luke is a standard side scrolling platform adventure, mechanically speaking. The control is not bad, but... you have to watch your distance from the enemies closely - if you're too far from them, or too close to them, they'll have time to attack you in between your shots. This can complicate things, since most enemies take three shots (!?) to kill. Also, placement is critical when trying to catch onto the side of a wall, to hang there or to climb up. Once again, if it's too close or too far - it's no good. One neat feature in Lucky Luke is the occasional place that you have to change your environment to be able progress. For example, there's a place on the first level in which one of the logs you are supposed to stand on is broken; you have to have picked up the replacement log earlier in the level, and then press 'Down' to use it. Only then can you continue up and over the building.
