Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 2

Score: 92%
ESRB: Teen
Publisher: 3DO
Developer: 3DO
Media: CD/1
Players: 1 - 2
Genre: Action

Graphics & Sound:

Overall, Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 2 is a really fun game. The graphics definitely aren't top notch, but they get the job done. Explosions take form and look great. The music is pretty good, and keeps a nice beat, although sometimes it seems to stop altogether. The sound fx are also well done. You will hear all of the explosions and gunfire surrounding you as you infiltrate the enemy.

Gameplay:

Gameplay is where the real thrills are in Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 2. Anyone that has ever played with little green plastic men when he/she was younger will love having them come to life in the palm of your hand. AMSH2 is based around the fact that there are portals to 'the alternate world,' and the Tan Army is using them to their advantage. It seems there is a magic serum that turns toys into living things, and the Tan are going to use them to defeat you, the Green Army.

Like its predecessor, Sarge's Heroes 2 is a 3rd person shooter in which you will control your little green buddies in pursuit of victory. To do so, you will have many weapons to choose from. These include your standard M-16 and grenades to bazookas and flame-throwers! And it's a good thing you will have a vast variety of weaponry, because you're going to need it as you battle a whole sling of baddies including helicopters and tanks, through 16 missions of absolute mayhem.

Sarge's Heroes 2 does also have a multiplayer mode, in which you and one other person can hook it up and battle in one of four worlds. Unfortunately, the multiplayer mode just isn't terribly fun. It is enjoyable, but it doesn't have the same fun factor as the single player mode.

Difficulty:

Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 2 starts out slow, but builds from there. Don't worry though. If you haven't ever played any of the Army Men games, you can first go through the Boot Camp mode to learn how to control your little plastic friends. After a bit of practice, the controls will become second nature and you will be taking out the Tan in no time.

Game Mechanics:

Game controls take some getting used to. For the most part, controlling your characters is pretty basic, but learning how to truly maneuver at your best may take some time. There is a lock-on mechanism as long as you keep the enemy in view, which does make things easier. Army Men: Sarge's Heroes 2 is a solid game and fans of the series will not be disappointed. PS2: Sarge's Heroes 2 is most definitely PS2-compatible. In fact, load times (although not too bad on the PSX) are noticeably improved. Texture mapping also seems a bit smoother when you are closer to objects then when played on the PSX. These things are by no means greatly improved, but it does make you feel good that the PS2 has potential to breathe new life into PSX games.
