Graphics & Sound:

Okay, it's a Gameboy. How good can the graphics get? Honestly, not too good. Well, that's what I can say about NHL 2000. I can't say that the graphics are bad, but they aren't all that good either. As far as Gameboy standards go, it's not bad at all. The basic problem is that everything is just too small. With all those hockey players on the ice, it's impossible to have good detail and sizable images. I do have to give this to them - the puck is easy to identify and follow. You never have to worry about 'losing the puck.' As far as sound goes - it has standard Gameboy sound. Nothing special on sound, and great puck recognition, it's not a bad find.

Gameplay:

Well boys and girls, its hockey. Ice, sticks, pucks - what more do you need? Several modes including Exhibition, Playoffs, and Seasons are available for your frozen enjoyment. The Season mode offers password progression, so you don't have to finish it all at once. The game really doesn't run all that smoothly, but it's not too bad. I also noticed that not all the rules are defaulted and I never got into a fight. Other than that, it's just an ordinary hockey sim.

Difficulty:

I found the game to be pretty easy. The game itself is easy, the learning curve is easy, the controls are easy - nothing to it. Unfortunately, that means no competition. There are some customizable features to it, but none really affect the difficulty. If you're looking for an easy hockey game, this is the one for you.

Game Mechanics:

As I said before, it runs choppy and slow. Actually, it's not that big a problem because the screen is so small, you need it to run slower and scroll choppy. The two-button configuration keeps everything pretty simple. Overall, not a bad little game. NHL 2000 is a decent looking, easy playing, not too shabby a hockey game.
