Graphics & Sound:
The graphics in Test Drive 5 are beautifully rendered locales from around the world. Architecturally, there’s a lot of attention given to detail. The vehicles look a little unrealistic, but the raindrops and lens flare on the windshield are a nice touch (although a bit hard to buy when you are in “chase view”). There was quite a problem with pop-in, and in several levels, the graphics’ seams were highly visible, which was distracting. For all the time that seemed to be spent on level creation, they seemed hastily put together. TD5 does feature an awesome soundtrack including hard-rockin’ artists like KMFDM, Junkie XL, and Gravity Kills.

Gameplay:
Test Drive 5 is enjoyable. I found the handling to be average, although some cars are decidedly better than others. One thing to note is that even though you are traveling at very high speeds, it doesn’t seem so unless you are playing from inside the car. There are numerous races to choose from, as well as many vehicle choices, from American classics to concept cars. You can choose Quick Race, Full Race, Drag Race, or Cop Chase. Cop Chase is innovative! A game in itself, you’re the cop driving about looking for criminals. Spot someone out of line and nail ‘em!

Difficulty:
I found it quite tough to place in the top three positions. TD5 is quite a challenge. In the Era race in Cup Race mode, you can race and progress to the next level no matter what position you come in. A good choice for beginners.

Game Mechanics:
Standard fare for controls. Test Drive 5 is Dual Shock and Analog compatible, as well as Steering Wheel compatible. It’s not the most outstanding racing game, but it does give you a wide array of level choices and race types.
