Star Wars Galaxies: An Empire Divided

Score: 85%
ESRB: Teen
Publisher: LucasArts
Developer: Sony Online Entertainment
Media: CD/4
Players: Massively Multi-player
Genre: MMORPG

Graphics & Sound:

The simple fact that Star Wars Galaxies allows players to run around Star Wars locales and do Star Wars stuff may make some blind to the fact that the graphics aren't really that great. It has more of an Everquest feel than anything else, but once you see Jabba's palace towering in the distance, of the vast forests of Endor, will you really care about the slightly jagged edges and choppy gameplay?

The music is as you would expect; classic Star Wars ambiance. The scores from the movies are ported over to this game, and fit the action on the screen well. You'll listen to softer music as you stroll around the countryside, hear the famous jazz beat in the Mos Eisley Cantina, and be treated to the Imperial March when in Empire territory.

Gameplay:

Some of the latter influxes of MMORPG's have been trying to steer away from the generic type of gameplay offered by earlier titles of the genre. Most are doing away with leveling up and instead focusing on mastering specific skills. Star Wars Galaxies is of the new breed, and actually breathes some new life into this controversial line of games.

Being able to join the Empire, aid the Rebellion, run around Tatooine as a wookie, or become a Jedi are just a few of the selling points that this game has. Galaxies is a persistent world in the vein of George Lucas' sci-fi masterpiece, and gives you the opportunity to become part of it.

Taking place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back (there's about a five year gap in between there, which gives the developers plenty of time to work with), you enter the universe as one of 8 different species. Humans, Zabraks, and Calamari (the species, not the dish) are just of the few types of life forms you can play as. Customizing your character is almost as deep a task as refining your profession. Hair styles, tattoos, and the shape of just about everything visible can be tampered with.

When you finish up with the superficial stuff, you choose what novice skill you want to start out with. There are no restrictions based on race or sex, so you can look as silly as you want and still be a bad ass bounty hunter.

What to do now, you say? Even though Galaxies seems like its still in Beta, there is plenty of stuff to do already. Your skills will ultimately dictate what you can and cannot do alone, but almost anything can be accomplished with a well rounded group of friends. Scattered around most of the worlds are theme parks like Jabba's Palace on Tatooine and the Emperor's Retreat on Naboo. These require you to complete a heck of a lot of missions before you can enter inside them and reap whatever cool benefits they have to offer.

There is no shortage of things to do, places to explore, or people to meet. And don't forget that there is a war going on, and joining sides will help tip the scales, but it's up to you which way you want them tipped. Player vs. Player combat is not allowed unless both players give their consent, but if you join either side of the war, you can freely attack the opposing side wherever you see them. There are also battlefields where large groups of Rebels and Imperials gather to wage large scale war on each other. Anyone can enter a battlefield, and once you do, you have to pick a side. Just hope that it's not the losing one.

Difficulty:

As with most games of this type, Star Wars Galaxies lets you dictate how difficult things will be, to a certain extent. The higher you set your sights, the tougher your tasks will become. Once you get a hang of things, it's simply a matter of going out and doing whatever pleases you. Entertainers won't find their jobs too difficult, but collecting all those bantha trophies with nothing but a vibroblade is a different story.

Game Mechanics:

Though the system of leveling up has been discarded, advancing through the game is still pretty straightforward. There are a handful of main skills that anyone can learn, and mastering select skills from those will allow you to attain hybrid skills. Mastering every skill in the game at the same time is impossible, because you only have so many points you can to allot to upgrade your skills. However, these points can be 'bought back' by forfeiting the skill you spent them on, which will allow you to put those points towards other skills.

The fighting system is also very intuitive, and includes both hand-to-hand and ranged combat. The mechanics are turn based, but everything takes place in real time. There are plenty of NPC's out there to slaughter, of all skill types, so be sure to pick your battles wisely.

Star Wars Galaxies is a game that has to grow on you. There are plenty of bugs and a bit too much lag, but once the developers squash those problems, the possibilities will be endless. The developers are already working on new expansions for the game, which include both a vehicular expansion and a space-flight expansion. These will allow players to own both land and space transportation equipment. But like most MMORPG's, if you're not ready to give it some quality time early on, this title is definitely not for you. However, an online Star Wars experience can't be all that bad can it? It's all happening right now in a store not too far away, so what are you waiting for?
