Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb

Score: 80%
ESRB: Teen
Publisher: LucasArts
Developer: The Collective
Media: CD/2
Players: 1
Genre: Action/ Adventure

Graphics & Sound:

Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb is a Tomb Raider-style 3rd person perspective action adventure that features rich graphics and good sound effects. The game takes place in a number of locales, and they are all rendered very nicely. Texture quality of environments is not as good as most modern first person shooters, but character models look great, and overall the presentation is excellent.

Sound effects and music are all quite convincing, and the overall feel of the game is that of the Indiana Jones movies. Even the voice acting is well done, and when combined with the look-alike character model, the game really shows its authenticity.

Gameplay:

As already mentioned, gameplay in Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb is reminiscent of the Tomb Raider series of games. Here the gaming style seems less rigid though, and although there are a number of puzzles, most levels really just require one to traverse through the environment, fight a number of foes, and reach the end of the level.

Although gameplay isn't staggeringly deep, it is varied, as one can use a number of different weapons during combat, including guns, a whip, shovels, bottles, and swords. Beyond combat, there is quite a bit of jumping, swinging, and otherwise getting around, and this is handled in some innovative ways. For instance, many times Indy has to use his whip to swing across crevices, but after he's fallen into a hole, he can climb, jump, or shimmy his way out.

Difficulty:

There are selectable difficulty levels, and at the hardest setting, combat can be very difficult. Enemy AI is competent, but often does wacky things and can often be outsmarted.

Game Mechanics:

Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb has a slick user interface that provides easy access to everything from graphics resolution to control layout. Gamepads are well supported, and they work flawlessly. The control layout is intuitive, and installing, configuring, and playing the game is a breeze.

Although similar to Tomb Raider in many ways, Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb sets itself apart by really fleshing out the movie series, adding to it in a way that seems quite natural. The graphics are sharp, sound is solid, and the presentation is top notch. Combined with the excellent controls and welcome integration with gamepads, this game is heartily recommended to fans of both action adventures and the Indiana Jones movies.
